Welcome to Southernside
A nature-filled neighborhood with a storied past
Nestled along the Reedy River, Southernside is a neighborhood in the midst of rejuvenating itself. It is highly accessible to the city, with Downtown’s business district and Hampton-Pinckney just next door. It’s a beautiful community that has persisted through hard times to thrive in the 21st Century.
The neighborhood of Southernside grew up around the train depot, which was built in the 1870s and brought with it all sorts of jobs and commerce. As the decades rolled on, Southernside became the site of much tension in the city, and by the mid-20th Century, it was suffering. However, the residents and activists in the community pictured a brighter future and have revitalized their homes over time, creating a vibrant home for themselves and newcomers.
As part of the recent revitalization efforts, there’s been an influx of new constructions built in Southernside. There are gorgeous, new single-family homes and townhouses to be found here, as well as older buildings that represent the history of this neighborhood. Many of them have been meticulously renovated according to the master plan for the community’s growth.

Local Lifestyle
Bordered by the river, with a plethora of parks to choose from and easy commutes to the rest of Greenville, Southernside is in a prime location. It hasn’t always been the revitalized, beautiful neighborhood it is today, but throughout the years there have always been residents who championed its growth, and that mentality persists today. This long-standing neighborhood is focused on community, the vibrant growth of local businesses, and the families that call it home.
Dining, Entertainment & Shopping
Southernside is full of small businesses and big community gathering spaces, like The Commons. Shopping, dining, and community all meld together into one destination filled with energy.
Methodical Coffee’s process is right there in its name. The slow, methodical brew and the way they roast it are integral to the finished process, and they are also very intentional about making sure their coffee gives back to those who help make it every step of the way. Golden Brown & Delicious is a funky, passionate restaurant serving a wide array of dishes from burgers and fried chicken to Bibimbap and cocktails. Automatic Taco started as a taco truck and now has a permanent home inside The Commons. Find your favorite new beer at any of the incredible breweries in Southernside, including Community Tap Trailside, Southernside Brewing Co., and Pangaea Brewing.
Carolina Triathlon is the neighborhood’s favorite bike store. Soul Yoga has yoga classes, teacher training, and a small boutique in the lobby. For all your athletic wear needs, Hincapie Sportswear has you covered. They have men and women’s clothes, as well as custom styles for team jerseys and events apparel.
Things to Do
Like most of Greenville’s best neighborhoods, Swamp Rabbit Trail runs through the heart of Southernside, offering residents an easy opportunity to get outside and get their hearts pumping. Unity Park is a 60-acre park that is still being constructed, with plans to open in 2022. The city unveiled plans for it several years ago, and it will feature a suspension bridge, a large playground, picnic areas, and a new section of Swamp Rabbit Trail.
The Commons has various events, such as special nights for those who work in the service industry, brewery mingles for runners, and holiday events. It’s a wonderful community gathering place that is a hub of excitement and mingling.
